In the past style and fashion have been focused on women, but now men too are expected to know what's in fashion and what clothes will suit them. It's not always an easy task, so here's our run down of the hottest menswear trends for 2010 and how to wear them.

1. Double denim

Double denim is a massive trend for both sexes this season. Top designers have featured this look recently, with it playing a big part in the D&G catwalk ranges so it's sure to be a hot style for the spring/summer.
The key to getting this look right is to keep it simple. Wear jeans and a denim shirt with a plain black or white t-shirt underneath or a simple dark jumper under a denim jacket. When it comes to shades, contrast all the way, if you try and match then you'll inevitably end up missing by a shade or two- not a good look! Even if you do get the match perfect contrast works best.

2. V-Neck Jumpers

The V-neck jumper is a style classic that works year in year out. V-necks suit everybody and are particularly good for smart/casual occasions. The best things about the classic v-neck are the potential for layering and the choice of colours around - ideal for showing a little personality and flair without going too crazy!
If you're a bigger man then the V-neck jumper is your new best friend. When it comes to big men's clothing there are few items that are as slimming and stylish, the "v" is makes you appear thinner, whilst layering with a t-shirt and jacket adds structure to a bigger frame.
Cardigans are also a great way to wear this trend; the button down or zip fastening will provide the "v - neck" and they work well at a range of occasions; but remember thin cardigans are good for work; chunky styles should be reserved for casual wear.

3. Military Jacket

Military jackets are on trend more often than not, so a good military jacket is an investment for future seasons. The military look is set to be huge this season; navy, charcoal, black and khaki tones are the shades of choice. Epaulettes are the perfect way to show off your shoulders (think of them as the masculine equivalent of shoulder pads). So all you need to decide is whether to go thick and padded for spring or lightweight for summer. Remember with a light military jacket you can always layer it.
4. Canvas Trainers

Once reserved for teenagers on skateboards, the canvas trainer has made a real leap into fashion in recent years. Well-known brands are generally a good way to go: Gola, Lonsdale, Vans and Converse (oldies but goodies) and unless you're going to buy multiple pairs to go with different outfits then stick to a neutral shade - far easier to coordinate and less likely to look dated.

5. Jeans

Jeans are an absolute must for any man's wardrobe, suitable for all but the most formal occasions and incredibly easy to dress up or down. A shirt and tie with jeans and smart shoes is ideal for a night out, whilst worn with a t-shirt or cardigan and trainers you'll get the perfect casual look. Stick to faded shades this season and don't forget if you're doing double denim contrasting colours is essential!

So keep these trends in mind when it comes to shopping this season, add a few key pieces to a staple wardrobe and you can't go far wrong. True style is a balance between classic looks and the latest trends, following the latest looks is important; being a slave to them isn't!
